Mr. and Mrs. Foster

Weddings

On the morning of Mary Kate and Kevin’s wedding, Kyle shared a sweet conversation with Kevin’s best man—his dad, Jim. This was only the second time in the six years that we’ve been shooting weddings that we’ve seen a parent serve in this role. Leading up to their wedding day, we were very excited to meet this special dad who had the honor of being his son’s best man. Jim told Kyle about how he was always very close to his own father—in fact, Jim’s father was his best man, too—and that he always prayed that if he were blessed with a son, he’d be close to him, too. With a big smile, he told Kyle, “And I am.” This is a beautiful example of what the wedding day is truly about: the family.

There were family members woven into every aspect of Mary Kate and Kevin’s wedding day. During the toasts, we got to hear from Kevin’s dad and Mary Kate’s dad and sisters. The same story was told by several of them: the night of Mary Kate’s flat tire. As the story goes, Mary Kate and Kevin had been on a few dates in college, but it sort of fizzled out. One night, while out to dinner with his family, Kevin saw on Instagram that Mary Kate had a flat tire. She had sent a message out, hoping someone would be in the area and willing to lend a hand. Kevin left his family at dinner to go help Mary Kate.

While learning how to trust more deeply in God’s providence in all circumstances, our own family has started to say, “It is good” when something doesn’t seem too good. We do this to remind ourselves that God is always in control. Once some time has passed, we’re usually able to see that the thing was, in fact, very good, even though it didn’t feel like it at the time. We were thinking about this while listening to the flat tire story. It’s very likely that Mary Kate was not thinking “this is good” when her tire went flat, but God used precisely that flat tire to bring Kevin back into her life. Honestly, we can’t imagine how things ever fizzled out between these two because they are such a wonderful match, but even in that, “it is good.” God’s timing is perfect!

Mary Kate and Kevin, our encouragement to you is to say “it is good” when those inevitable flat tires pop up throughout your marriage. It’s often hard to see the goodness in the moment, but God sees all. Keep that first flat tire in your minds to remind you of how God can bring such excellent things into our lives through events that don’t seem too great. Our family could write a book to tell all of the stories of God’s goodness that we’ve observed since we started to look for them. We bet the day will come that you can fill up your own book, too, starting with the story of the flat tire! We’re praying for you; thanks for letting us be a part of your wedding day!

Love,

Amy and Kyle
